This catalogue, wich covers the Ashmolean collection of European sculpture dating from 1200 to around 1540, follows in the footsteps of Nicholas Penny's acclaimed 1992 catalogue of later European sculpture held by the Museum. From Romanesque bronzes and Gothic ivories to High Renaiissance sculpture, the catalogue is a meticulous and comprehensive record of over 500 pieces, each one fully illustrated. The first volume, which catalogues metalwork from c. 1200, includes entries on many of the finest bronzes in C.D.E. Fortnum's astonishing collections. It also includes an illustrated duscussion of his involvement in the development of the Ashmolean's displays and an appendix providing technical analyses of selected bronzes. The second volume catalogues more than 130 pieces of sculpture in nonmetallic materials, arranged by country of origin, material and period, and ranging from medieval ivory, alabaster and wood carvings through to Italian Hig Renaissance sculpture. It also includes a checklist of later sculpture acquisitions made since the publication of Nicholas Penny's 1992 catalogue. A number of post-1540 sculptures came to light during recent reorganisations at the Ashmolean, and these are also catalogued here. The third volume contains a full, illustrated catalogue of the outstanding collection of plaquettes and small metal reliefs in the Ashmolean, dating from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries. This is supported by three substantial illustrated essays on the collecting and display of plaquettes, as well as a comprehensive bibliography and indexes covering all three volumes.
