Paolo Antonacci opened his gallery at 141/a Via del Babuino in Rome in 1998. Coming from a long line of Roman antique dealers, he had worked for over twenty years in the prestigious Rome and London galleries belonging to his father Giuseppe, a very well known international antiquarian. Right from the start, Paolo’s new gallery distinguished itself for the expertise and attention devoted to paintings from the period between the late 18th century and the first half of the 20th century, with a particular regard for Vedutismo. Since its first publication of a catalogue devoted to landscape views of the Grand Tour in 1998, the gallery has annually published a volume devoted, each time, to a different aspect of the subject. Among these we recall the catalogues on the Roman Carnival and the Golden Age of Danish Artists in Rome in the 19th Century. The latter publication led the Municipality of Rome to endorse Paolo Antonacci with curating the exhibition of Danish artists working in 19th century Rome, which was organized for the visit of queen Margrethe of Denmark. The gallery has also opened its spaces to exhibitions by contemporary artists and, over the years, it developed a particular interest in the little-known sector of 19th century antique photographs. The gallery participates in such major antiques fairs as the Florence International Biennial Antiques Fair at Palazzo Corsini, the Biennale d’Arte at Palazzo Venezia in Rome and the Milano International Antique Show at Palazzo della Permanente in Milan. The gallery regularly takes part in prestigious international fairs such as Masterpiece London and Munich Highlights. In 2013 Paolo Antonacci took part in Master Drawings Week in New York, as well as Masterpiece, the Biennial in Florence and Munich Highlights. In late spring the gallery held a major exhibition focused on the collection of Danish and Roman 19th century paintings from the collection of Mr Jørgen Birkedal Hartmann. Over the years, Paolo Antonacci has forged strong relationships with many national and international collectors, scholars and museum curators. He has sold important pictures to major Roman museums such the Museo di Roma, the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, the Vatican Museums, the Museo del Corso, the American Academy of Rome, the Sovrintendenza per il Polo Museale Fiorentino in Florence and many others significant institutions and private collections. In March 2014 the gallery had the privilege of participating at TEFAF Maastricht and Masterpiece London in June of the same year.
